Most of the people I met asked me how to learn Italian faster. Sometimes because they had to move to Italy very soon or because they had no much time available.
As a matter of fact, almost all of my learners asked for my help to discover how to study faster.
If you’re looking for a quicker method to master a new language, you could come across an interesting issue reading the following paragraphs.
Why trying to learn faster doesn’t work
What does “to learn faster” actually mean?
Maybe you are looking for some memorisation techniques, however it is worth noting that time is the true key of learning.
To begin with, faster can be interpreted in several different ways according to different people.
A valuable question to ask yourself could be “how much time do you need to learn something?”.
For instance, you could find out you don’t have enough free time to focus on learning or maybe you just have to come up with a way to gain it.
In order to do that, you must set your goal and your priorities.
No time means no learning.
Let’s discover why.
Learning and memory
The reason why time is an essential element for learning dwells in the nature of mind and brain.
Not surprisingly, learning means to build memory, so new neuronal cells, such as neurons and synapses.
How do we memorise?
Any information we come across ends up in a sort of filter (the short-term memory) where it spends just a little time.
After some days, if you do not show any interest in it, it gets lost.
That’s why you could have studied many Italian terms, but you forgot them after some days.
You can really state you memorised something, exclusively when new synapses or neurons developed in your brain.
It happens because, after some chemical reactions typical of the memorisation process, new information moves from the short to the long-term memory.
From a cognitive perspective, the development of new competencies happens through spontaneous mental processes.
However, if you approach learning in an unnatural way, these processes could fail.
Learning means to develop competencies you can actually implement in your daily life.
It happens when you create meaningful learning: according to David Ausubel theory, human beings actually gain knowledge when new information is consciously anchored to pre-existing cognitive structures.
Being mindful of how the mind works when learning is the key of an effective skill acquisition so that it can consequently happen without any waste of time.
How to learn Italian effectively instead
Learning isn’t an instantaneous act: it is a biological and cognitive process requiring time, method and awareness.
New information turns into competencies exclusively when the brain processes and associates it to something you already know, through effective studying habits.
If you don’t have a user manual of your brain and mind, the risk is to make many attempts, wasting time without any results.
For the purpose of giving my students a simple user guide to learn Italian effectively, as well as any skill they want, I created the LearnFor study method.
Whatever learning Italian faster means to you, doing it through a method that is consistent with the natural memorisation processes will allow you to master the language successfully.
Whether you have a lot or a little time to focus on learning, being aware of how much time you need to truly speak Italian effectively will enable you to mindfully engage it and succeed.
As a matter of fact, when you study Italian following a scientific method, you do it faster than anyone else.
